Local Community Resource List
This local nonprofit connects the public to events and organizations supporting its 3-part mission of "heritage, international exchange, and humanities." Subscribe to their Cultural Communiqué Newsletter to learn about the global connections going on in our Metro area: everything from film festivals, cultural center and embassy Open Houses to museum exhibits and walking tours.

Lesson ideas: If an in-person visit to a DC event isn't feasible, use news articles, web galleries, and other online media to help students explore the links between their region, the world, and their curriculum.

The Manassas Museum is home to history and culture exhibits and events right in our local community. For example, the exhibit Bridging Cultures: The Latino Community in Manassas explores the diversity, traditions, and contributions of local Latinos. Global is local, and vice versa!
This world-class museum network is right in our backyard and shares its resources and research with the public. Aside from its extensive online resources, educators can make use of its in-person professional development, plan a field trip to expose students to real-world learning, and visit exhibits personally with their curriculum in mind.
This Manassas-based nonprofit sends medical and other volunteer teams all over the world to undertake health care and development projects, including here in the US and disaster response. Students could get involved with raising money or supplies to donate to the organization in an action project. Students can also read their blog for examples of collaborative global problem-solving.
This network does in-person work for teens and women in the greater D.C. area related to empowerment and the UN SDGs (Global Goals). Teens can also connect virtually from around the world to collaborate on taking global action. Would be perfect for middle and high school students!
Local Universities
Local universities host international students, teachers and researchers, conduct global research that connects with K-12 disciplines (science, art, etc.), and engage with the community through cultural events, service projects, and more. The logos linked here represent some of the major universities closest to Manassas Park, but alumni from other regional universities may find resources and opportunities at their alma maters as well.
